Shaw worked with choirs right from the start of his career, if not before, as his father James Shaw was an organist and choirmaster at Hampstead Parish Church. At the end of his career Shaw was, in effect, a Bishop of Music for the Diocese of Chelmsford, and was created a Doctor of Music by Lambeth Palace in recognition of his work for the Church.

His many anthems are a testament to his work.
