Music & Song
Solo Songs
Until Shaw managed to persuade Curwen to publish his songs in 1914, English songs were of the shop ballad type, tub-thumpers such as Tie up your troubles, so were not suitable for classical singers.
Using the best of English poetry, both traditional and contemporary, Shaw set about to change this, setting them to music for professional singers –all part of his work to create a renaissance in English music.
Initially he had great trouble getting songs of this type published, but today the lists of many major composers would not be complete without them.
SOME REVIEWS of the day:
Welcome additions to our growing store of genuinely English song. –Musical Times
No more delightful gift to singers can be imagined. –Western Mail
Any singer with a taste above the rubbish of the ballad concerts will find great satisfaction in these sturdy native songs, the outstanding element of which is sincerity. –Musical Standard
'The Martin Shaw idiom', if we may call it, is here unmistakable.... It is an idiom which needs some aquaintance for its full appreciation, but to form this aquaintance is worthwhile, as it is likely to deepen into friendship. –Organist and Choirmaster
