Shaw’s song dedication is To John Masefield. The two men had known each other in Shaw’s bohemian years in Chelsea, and went on to work together on projects in the late 1920s and early 1930s, in particular A Masque of Liverpool, created specially for the opening of Liverpool Cathedral.
Bliss Carman was a celebrated Canadian poet, regarded as Canada’s poet laureate in his later years.
